The Summit is Petzl Charlet's new axe for classical mountaineering; at home moderate mountaineering, ski touring and self arresting. The Petzl Charlet Summit is a great general mountaineering axe, having the functionality of a walking axe but technical enough for steeper ground.
The Summit's curved shaft gives excellent clearance on steep ground, giving it greater technicality than a standard walking axe; however the straight lower shaft means that the axe plunges well in harder snow. The Shaft is made from ultra-light aluminium with a textured rubber coating giving excellent grip and a certain level of insulation; it is B rated, meaning it should not be belayed from. The stainless steel spike is hardwearing and offers excellent purchase as well as being designed to protect the rubber grip. The head is hot forged chromoly steel and the pick is B rated and tapers from 8mm to 3.5mm to give excellent holding power and penetration in anything from ice to snow.
